Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said that “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. King and the subsequent founding of the African American Student Union (AASU) at Georgia Tech. Moreover, 2018 witnesses a breakthrough in the struggle for gender equity and equality through the #MeToo movement as the “Silence Breakers” were named TIME’s 2017 Person of the Year.

During Georgia Tech’s Fifth Annual Black History Month Lecture, “Giving Voice to Justice for 50 Years,” Angela Rye, principal and CEO of IMPACT Strategies, political commentator for CNN, and political analyst for NPR, will discuss the recent controversies of sexual harassment, the unmasking of male privilege, and the impact of the #MeToo movement.

• What factors gave rise to the #MeToo movement, and what is the potential of this movement to shift the dynamics of gender equity and equality in society?
• What are some of the most pressing issues facing women today, especially women of color?
• How can we use our story, our access, and our privilege to give voice to justice in the next 50 years?
• What can students and employees at Georgia Tech do to promote gender equity and equality, particularly in the current political climate?
