School of Public Policy professor Diana Hicks, along with associate SPP professors Julia Melkers and Kimberley Isett and visiting researcher Nicolas Robinson-Garcia, recently published: "The Unbearable Emptiness of Tweeting -- about journal articles," in PLOS ONE and within a week the article had accumulated 10,000 pageviews, 700 downloads and 625 tweets. The attention prompted a report in the Times Higher Education. 

The article for the quartet of Georgia Tech Public Policy scholars was published in PLOS ONE on August 24. According to the article's abstract (which can be found here), the main goal is, "to better comprehend the role Twitter plays in scholarly communication and the potential value of tweet counts as traces of broader engagement with scientific literature."

Among the insights that the Times Higher Education article (which can be found here) discusses is how the team of Georgia Tech scholars, "found that the most tweeted paper, about acetaminophen (paracetamol), accumulated 264 tweets, putting it in the top 5 per cent of research outputs scored by Altmetric."
