"4D Flow MRI and the Search for Imaging Biomarkers of Cardiovascular Disease"

Alex Barker, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor
Department of Radiology
Northwestern University

Abstract:
For the past 20 years 4D flow MRI has remained a 'research-only' exam - primarily due to long exam times and complex postprocessing requirements. Recent advances in hardware and software are poised to bring this once hours-long technique within the realm of a ten minute 'exam-and-answer'. In this talk, we will cover a number of high-level applications in which our group has gathered evidence to show that this technique has a promising future in the clinical workflow. Furthermore, we will take a deep dive looking at the use of 4D flow MRI to investigate confounding effects of complex hemodynamics on bicuspid aortic valve aortopathy.

The Bioengineering Seminar Series is co-hosted by the Parker H. Petit Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience, and the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University.
