Tim Widing
4th Year, Material Science and Engineering major
Operations Assistant at Campus Recreation

“Tim is not just a tremendous employee at the CRC, he is an outstanding person here and in the community. I am proud to know this young man and I am honored to nominate Tim Widing for the Campus Services Student Spotlight,” said Rod Bolden, Operations Manager, Campus Recreation.

“Tim has been in the CRC Operations department for the past two years.  His service to the department has been exemplary. He has successfully been on two Shutdown Projects and has been selected to be a Team leader because of his result oriented insight and his ability to motivate even his own peers,” continued Bolden.

“On several occasions he has volunteered to come to the facility and handle difficult projects when no one was able to complete.  In extreme weathered conditions, it was Tim who again volunteered to come and apply salt to sidewalks, walk ways, and post signs to ensure the safety of all patrons.

"He is surprising shy and quiet, but will not hesitate to lead a team or volunteer for a project with positive results and resolve.  In Operations, we count on Tim on many projects and he has never disappointed us in any way.  Always producing in the highest satisfaction manner, Tim has become our “finisher” because when he is in the building, tasks will be finished and it will be finished in a timely and professional manner.  This young man is a true asset to the Georgia Tech community.”

We asked Tim to tell us more about himself. Here’s what he said.

“How long have you worked in this position?”

  • 1 year

“What are your duties in this position?”

  • I help with the day-to-day operations of the CRC which includes maintenance on the fitness equipment and the SAC fields as well as maintenance on the sand volleyball courts around campus.

“What do you like best about working in this position?”

  • My coworkers. They’re all super cool and down to earth and it’s been really exciting to get to know them and to work together to make the CRC a better place.

“How has this position helped you?”

  • This position has helped me branch out of my comfort zone and meet new people and make friendships with coworkers in my department as well as in the other departments in the CRC.

“What have you learned through working here?”

  • I’ve learned to depend on others and to not try to do everything by myself. It’s very easy as a Tech student to think you can take on the world by yourself but sometimes it’s best to take a step back and to work with others to get the job done.

“Favorite Book?”

  • Ender’s Game

“Favorite Restaurant/Food?”

  • Italian

“Favorite Spot on Campus?”

  • The Baptist Collegiate Ministry (BCM) building

“Favorite Quotes?”

  • “Just give me all the bacon and eggs you have. Wait…wait. I worry what you just heard was: ‘Give me a lot of bacon and eggs’. What I said was: ‘Give me all the bacon and eggs you have’. Do you understand?” – Ron Swanson

“What do you like to do on the weekends?”

  • Sleep, watch Netflix, and procrastinate on school work

“Who is your favorite professor and why?”

  • Dr. Matthew McDowell in the MSE department. He provided an energy and excitement for the course material unlike any other professor I’ve had. He made the subject matter interesting and did a great job of relating topics to concepts we already understood to help us learn the material better.

“What is your favorite class and why?”

  • MSE 4420 (Senior Design II). I have an amazing group and a very interesting project so the class was actually really enjoyable. It was really cool to be able to take everything I’ve learned in all of my classes to this point and apply it to a real world problem.

“Tell us about some organizations you’re involved with on campus.”

  • Baptist Collegiate Ministry (BCM)

“What advice do you have for incoming students?”

  • Enjoy college! Time flies by and before you know it, you’ll be a 4th year! Take time to do fun things like exploring Atlanta and doing the fun events that Georgia Tech offers.

“What would people be surprised to know about you?”

  • I’m a certified scuba diver.

“Favorite TV show?”

  • Psych

“What will you miss most about Tech after graduation?”

  • The community. It will be difficult to stay in touch with all of the friends I’ve made in my MSE classes, at the BCM, and while working at the CRC and I’m going to miss being able to see them every day.
