The Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts co-hosted “Resilient Atlanta: New Perspectives on the Civil War and Its Aftermath,” a symposium examining Atlanta’s post-Civil War economic and social recovery, on March 30, 2017.

The symposium aimed to bring to light the untold stories of Atlanta’s Reconstruction-era caregivers, teachers, business owners, and other individuals responsible in part for the city’s rebirth during the aftermath of the Civil War.

Featured speakers from the Ivan Allen College included Steve Usselman, professor and chair of the School of History and Sociology; Seymour Goodman, Regents Professor and Professor of International Affairs and Computing in the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs; and Douglas Flamming, professor in the School of History and Sociology. Additionally, Ali Yildirim, an undergraduate student in the School of History and Sociology, participated in a poster session.

The event was co-sponsored by the Ivan Allen College, the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, the School of History and Sociology, the Center for International Strategy, Technology, and Policy, the Rich Foundation, the Georgia Humanities Council, and the Callahan Fund for Global Technology and National Security.
