Abstract:

The objective of the proposed research is to devise methods to improve the estimation of systolic time intervals (STIs), specifically pre-ejection period (PEP), to pave the way for out-of-clinic, non-invasive, unobtrusive, and reliable monitoring of patients with heart failure using Ballistocardiogram (BCG) and Seismocardiogram (SCG) signals. The contributions of this research can be divided into three main parts: 1) improving STIs estimation from BCG  using a high bandwidth force plate and leveraging the increase in accuracy to estimate per-subject stroke volume changes; 2) investigating the effect of different sensor placements on the accuracy of SCG-based PEP estimation, and devising a method to classify SCG sensor positioning in unsupervised settings to prevent misleading estimations; 3) Combining SCG signals from an array of multiple accelerometers to obtain a signal that is more representative of the response of the entire body from cardiac ejection, rather than of local chest vibrations.
