College of Sciences Brings Ocean Discovery Zone Exhibit to Cowan Road Middle School

Primary tabs

The Ocean Discovery Zone is an exhibit booth and hands-on activity station designed to give nonscientists of all ages information about the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, in the Gulf of Mexico, and the importance of healthy ocean ecosystems.

Annalisa Bracco and her students from the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences; Sabrina Grossman, Marion Usselman, and Will Jimerson from CEISMC; and Emily Davenport from the University of Georgia will bring the Ocean Discovery Zone exhibit booth to the grade 7 students of Cowan Road Middle School, in Griffin, Georgia.

They will engage with students using teaching modules developed in collaboration with CEISMC. The modules' content are based on research by the ECOGIG Consortium, which studies the environmental impacts of hydrocarbon inputs on the deepwater ecosystems in the Gulf of Mexico

During the event, 7th-graders will have a chance to pilot a mini-ROV (remotely operated vehicle).
