Primary tabs

Don’t miss Georgia Tech’s RESILIENCE Employee Resource Group Brown Bag lunch event, “The Art of Empathy and Self-Compassion” where we will explore how empathy and self-compassion can help us more fully understand, appreciate, and accept people with whom we interact.

Date:                          November 16, 2016
Time:                         11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Location:                   Student Center Room 319
Facilitators:               Seth Marder, Ph.D., Pearl Alexander, and Cheryl Cofield

Description: Merriam Webster Online defines empathy as “the ability to share someone else's feelings.” Similarly, self-compassion is our ability to nurture and forgive ourselves. Together these traits reinforce our resilience and enhance our interactions with others. The people we encounter daily bring diverse experiences and perspectives to each interaction. Often, in attempting to understand others’ emotions and reactions, we naturally ponder what *we* might do in the situation only to find that the other person’s reaction is inexplicably different.

In this engaging dialogue, participants will:

  • Explore the definitions of empathy and self-compassion.
  • Distinguish both the associated emotions, and resulting self-talk that cause people to practice empathy and self-compassion.
  • Contrast the relationship of self-compassion to empathy, and the relationship of both to success at work and in life.
  • Recognize the impact empathy and self-compassion can have on our climate and culture.
  • Choose to be intentional in developing capacity to exercise self-compassion, and offer empathetic responses.
