In August, Georgian forces shelled the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali, which spurred Russia to move into the region the following day. Within the next few days, Russian forces moved through Southern Ossetia into Georgia.
Following a tenuous cease-fire, Russia officially recognized Southern Ossetia and Abkhazia
