Wei-Shou Hu, Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Minnesota, presents Reaction Engineering Classics in Systems Biotechnology as part of ChBE's seminar series.

ABSTRACT:
Classical reaction engineering has long been a key intellectual foundation for a wide range of
industrial processes. With the widespread application of high throughput genomics based
analytical tools a systems approach is becoming pivotal in biotechnological research. Reaction
engineering principles which guided chemical process design for half a century are becoming
instrumental in revealing biological regulations and in biotechnological discovery. Using
recombinant protein production by mammalian cells and natural product biosynthesis in
microbes as examples, this presentation will illustrate how classical stability and kinetic analysis
shed light on the mechanism of biochemical reactions and contribute to process enhancement.
The implication of the opportunities afforded by integration of reaction engineering and
biological investigation on education and training will be discussed.

Unless otherwise noted, all seminars are held in the Molecular Science and Engineering Building in Room G011. Refreshments are served at 3:30 PM. The seminar starts promptly at 4:00 PM.
