Terence Lang's Graduate Student Journey

Primary tabs

Terence Lang is earning a Master of Science in Building Construction/Facility Management with a focus in Residential Construction Development.

We sat down with Lang, the Estimating Manager with Century Communities, to discuss the path that led him to the School of Building Construction and the milestones in his graduate journey so far.

This is Lang's story, in his own words:

When I was an undergraduate at Florida A&M, I started as an architecture major. About half of the way through, I changed to Construction Management.  I was hired out of school by a home builder and went to work during a building boom in Orlando, Florida.

I’ve changed companies and moved to Georgia, but have stayed exclusively in Residential Construction. I thought about continuing my education and pursuing a master’s degree, but had not found the right opportunity.

When I stumbled on this degree, I knew it was what I needed. I knew pre-construction and the building process, I knew the day to day of the industry, but I felt I was lacking the why are we building here, why on this lot, why this part of town. This master’s program gave me the piece I was missing.

The master’s program itself was the hidden gem I had been seeking. This program was the perfect fit, it provided the understanding and the piece I had been missing.  In addition, certain classes really stood out.Rick Porter’s classes really hit the nail on the head.Having an industry professional teach home building is key.

I have flirted with the idea of a PhD, but need a break now. If an idea for research comes to me, I will know I’m ready for more.

My experience has been positive. I’m a full time building professional and I was able to earn a master’s from Georgia Tech and continue my career.

I would suggest to future students to do their due diligence on elective course selections. Take their time, pick electives carefully-because they can really supplement the curriculum. Of course, I would also tell future students to be ready for the work-hard work.
