Friday, February 5, 8:30 p.m.—Georgia Tech officials confirmed the name of the victim in Thursday's attack: Samer Tawfik, 39, a postdoctoral fellow in the School of Aerospace Engineering.

Friday, February 5, 1:30 p.m.—Officer Robert Turner, who was injured in the process of arresting yesterday's armed assailant, returned to work today after receiving treatment for his wounds. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the assailant, Kshitij Shrotri, waived his court hearing today and is expected to appear in Fulton County Superior Court later this month. The victim continues to recuperate at Grady Hospital.

Thursday, February 4, 5:30 p.m.—Earlier this afternoon, a post-doctoral research fellow in the School of Aerospace Engineering was injured by an assailant who attacked him with a sword. The assailant was quickly subdued by Georgia Tech police officers, one of whom was injured during the arrest.

Our immediate concern is for the victims who were transported to Grady Hospital where they are reported to be in stable condition. The victim’s name will be released after relatives are notified. The injured Georgia Tech police officer was Robert J. Turner, 29, of Griffin, Ga. He is expected to return to duty soon.

The alleged assailant, Kshitij Shrotri, is being held in the Fulton County Jail. He has been charged with aggravated assault. Additional charges may be filed pending further investigation. Shrotri received his PhD in aerospace engineering from Georgia Tech in 2008 and has not been affiliated with the Institute since then.

The rapid resolution of the incident preempted use of our emergency notification system, which is reserved for situations requiring members of the campus community to take immediate action.

The Georgia Tech Police Department investigation is on-going.
