Book Discussion with Amanda Gable

Primary tabs

Former Georgia Tech instructor and administrator Amanda Gable tells her journey of becoming a published author and guides a vivid discussion of "The Confederate General Rides North."

About the book:
Published in August 2009 by Scribner/Simon & Schuster, the novel is about eleven-year-old Katherine (Kat) McConnell, a precocious Civil War buff. Growing up in Georgia in the 1960s, Kat is so fascinated by stories of the war’s generals that she often imagines herself one of them, leading troops to battle. Kat seizes upon an impromptu road trip north with her mother as an opportunity for real adventure. She cleverly charts a course to battlefields and historic sites, following the path of her heroes. Unexpected revelations test her faith in her mother and her understanding of the war.

When their journey comes to an abrupt halt in Gettysburg and Kat faces the threat of real tragedy, she must make an irrevocable choice about where their ultimate destination–and her loyalty–lies.
