Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET) (This program does not lead to teacher certification in a U.S. state.)

The Japan Exchange and Teaching Program seeks to help enhance internationalization in Japan by promoting mutual understanding between Japan and other nations. The program also aims to improve foreign language education in Japan and to encourage international exchange at the local level by fostering ties between Japanese youth and foreign youth. The objectives of the program are being achieved by offering JET Program participants the opportunity to serve in local government offices as well as public and private elementary schools, junior high and senior high schools. Three types of jobs are:

Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) - ALTs are engaged in language instruction and placed mainly in local boards of education or public junior and senior high schools. There may be a very limited number of cases in which participants are placed in private junior and senior high schools. Applicants do not need Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certification or other education credentials, although these are beneficial.

Coordinator for International Relations (CIR)- CIRs are are engaged in internationalization activities and placed in offices of local authorities or related organizations. Applicants must have a strong command (semi-advanced to advanced level) of the Japanese language.Jpaan
