Job: NACCHO Intern - Environmental Health, Pandemic Preparedness, and Catastrophic Response

The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), a national organization representing the approximately 2,800 local health departments (LHDs) nationwide, has an opening for a spring intern.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position will support programmatic and administrative functions of NACCHO’s Environmental Health, Pandemic Preparedness and Catastrophic Response team. In addition, the intern will work with selected projects under the Environmental Health, Pandemic Preparedness and Catastrophic Response portfolio. The Environmental Health, Pandemic Preparedness and Catastrophic Response team has several programmatic areas including: public health law, environmental health, food safety, climate change, pandemic influenza planning and response, medical countermeasures, mass casualty/fatality planning and response, and CBRNE preparedness planning and response at the local, state, tribal, and national levels.

The Intern will be paid $12-$15 per hour and will require a minimum of 20 hours per week during regular office hours (flexible between the hours of 8:30 am and 5:00 pm), for up to 16 weeks.

This position typically performs analysis, research, writing, or project management tasks. Under supervision, he/she can complete projects or components of large scale projects/programs. Interns may have frequent contact with outside organizations or internal customers that may involve project coordination, information sharing, or resolution of problems. They may be required to travel to NACCHO meetings. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:

Bachelor's degree in public health or other relevant professional field required. • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization. • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. • Spreadsheet and word processing software experience required. • Preferred: Knowledge of public health issues at the local, state and/or federal level preferred. • Preferred: Knowledge of all-hazards preparedness issues. • Preferred: Knowledge of environmental health issues, including climate change. • Preferred: Knowledge of hazardous materials, including chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive agents. • Preferred: Knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel.
