Students, Faculty Team Up to 'Buzz It!'

Primary tabs

Faculty and students will have a chance to team up this week in a trivia contest hosted by the Student Center Programs Council (SCPC).

The once-a-semester Take-a-Prof event typically lets students and faculty members share a meal and get to know one another in a relaxed setting. This semester, however, SCPC is taking it to the next level by adding a team trivia contest.

“A lot of times students don’t think about getting to know their professors and creating a deeper relationship,” said Annie Son, a business administration major and event organizer. “We want to encourage that and help create community at Tech.”

The event will be offered at both lunch and dinner on Thursday, Feb. 26, in the Student Center Ballroom. Students are encouraged to invite either a professor or teaching assistant.

“Learning is more than just what happens in the classroom,” Son said. “To be able to have more of a relationship with faculty and have better discussions takes it to a whole new level.”

SCPC won the Student Government Association’s Buzzinga! competition last year, which offered funds to the best idea for student-faculty interaction. An outside game show company will help run the event. The trivia contest will include two rounds, and the whole event will last about an hour and a half.

“It’s a great way to network in a calm environment — there’s no pressure, no dressing up, just having fun,” Son said.

Take-a-Prof is $7 per faculty/student pair, and $7 for each additional student. Teams can have up to five members, with the only requirement being that each team includes at least one student and one instructor.
