Housing Recruits for the New Semesters Ahead

Primary tabs

When upperclassmen think about their first year at Tech, they realize there were always two people who were willing to help no matter the situation: Peer Leaders.

Being your peer leader, they knew it was their duty to be there for your support throughout that first year at Tech, and to be someone that new students could look up to.

Now the opportunity has come for new faces to apply for peer leader positions. Housing will hold information sessions in the coming weeks for all students who are interested. Those interested in applying must attend one session, which will provide an overview of the peer leader application process.

Trevor Vannucci, a second-year architecture major, shares his experiences and duties as a peer leader this year.

What made you want to be a freshman dorm peer leader (PL)?

When I was a freshman, I had an excellent PL who did a great job of pulling our hall together and making everyone’s freshman experience the best it could be. I wanted to be able to do that for another group guys coming through Tech.

What is your favorite part of being a PL?

One of the most rewarding parts of the job is having a group of guys who look up to you and feel comfortable coming to you with problems that they might experience during their first year.

What are some of your duties and responsibilities?

As part of the job, PLs are in charge of move in and move out procedures, and being “on duty” during the year, which entails walking the halls of the dorms, handling lock outs, and making sure all the residents are OK. However, the biggest part of the job is being there for your residents and helping them get through their first year on an everyday basis.

What would you say is the most difficult part of being a PL?

Being a PL isn’t a difficult job, in fact it is mostly just a rewarding experience. I’d say the only drawback is that it’s not the type of job that you walk away from at the end of the day. You’re on call 24/7 in case one of your residents has an issue that they need your help with.

If you could give one piece of advice to anyone applying for a PL or RA positions, what would it be?

Think of it less as a job and more of a chance to help people accommodate to college life, it’ll be a much more fun experience.
