"Integrating Engineering, Biology and Chemistry to Target and Disrupt the Tumor Microenvironment"

James Van Deventer, Postdoctoral Fellow, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Abstract:
Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the United States. Although survival rates are improving, these improvements are slow and uneven, with death rates attributable to some cancers remaining unchanged for over 40 years. Part of the difficulty in treating cancer is that tumor cells coopt their surroundings to create an environment conducive to cancer progression. This environment, known as the tumor microenvironment, is just as important to tumor progression as the tumor cells. Protein-based therapeutics hold great promise for disrupting this essential cancer support network. This talk will present biomolecular engineering approaches to the discovery of proteins capable of targeting the tumor microenvironment.
