Make History @ Tech

Primary tabs

Join the crowd on Tech Green for this history making event:

A Spiral Wave is a naturally occurring pattern found in nature: in colonies of bees and amoebas, in chemical reactions, and in even your retina, brain or heart. Scientists study spiral waves because they form a mathematical solution to different models used to study nature. These rules can be applied to crowds of people yet, surprisingly, no one has attempted to make a large scale human spiral wave!

Participants will pack into a grid formation on Tech Green
1.Your basic state is standing with your hands down (deactivation).
2.If your nearest neighbors has their hands, raise yours (activation).
3.After raising your hands up, you lower them again (deactivation).
4.Continually monitor your neighbors to activate or deactivate.
5.Only raise your hands when your nearest neighbors do, not before!

We will indicate who should start off raising their hands. We will also
attempt to change the spiral wave dynamics by varying the time participants
stay activated and deactivated. The events will be video recorded from
the roof of Clough and posted online after the event. You can watch a
computer simulation of the event here: https://vimeo.com/73768112
