Uwaifo Oyelere's Paper Selected for Publication in the AER P&P

Primary tabs

Professor Ruth Uwaifo Oyelere’s paper has been selected for publication in the American Economic Review papers and proceeding, forthcoming in 2014. The paper entitled `` Gender and Race Heterogeneity: The Impact of Students with Limited English on Native Students' Performance’’ is coauthored with Tim Diette.  This paper is focused on testing for heterogeneity across race and gender in peer effects of Limited English (LE) students on native students’ performance in math and reading in North Carolina.  North Carolina experienced the highest increase in immigrants in the 90s, making it a state appropriate for this type of analysis.  Using econometric methods they provide evidence for heterogeneity in effects across race and gender. Specifically they find no significant effects of LE students on White females but significant though small negative effects on both Black and White males in reading and math.  This paper was presented by Professor Oyelere at the just concluded Southern Economic Conference in Tampa.
