Professor Tom Conte of the School of Computer Science this week was elected as the 2014 president-elect of the Computer Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

In a separate development, Professor David Bader of the School of Computational Science and Engineering was tapped to join the society’s Board of Governors.

"I'm thrilled and proud that two of our faculty have been chosen for such prestigious positions in one of the most important professional organizations in our field,” said Zvi Galil, the John P. Imlay Jr. Dean of Computing. “Tom and David will be very effective leaders for IEEE and will serve as fine representatives for Georgia Tech. This is further evidence that the College of Computing is helping to set the national agenda in the digital age."

In his elected capacity, Conte will serve as the Computer Society’s president-elect in 2014, its president in 2015 and its past-president in 2016.

"The IEEE is the largest and most prolific professional organization in the world, and the IEEE Computer Society is its largest constituent society,” Conte said. “I'm both honored, and more than a little humbled, to be elected as Computer Society president.  I'm also very proud to be representing Georgia Tech in this role."

Bader’s three-term on the IEEE Computer Society’s Board of Governors will begin on Jan. 1.
