Ries opposes film tax credits on "Hollywood in Georgia" panel discussion on Georgia Public TV

Primary tabs

On January 20, 2013, Dr. Christine Ries was invited to join a Georgia Public TV broadcast panel discussion on Georgia's tax incentives to its growing film industry.  The discussion was a part of the television show "Hollywood in Georgia" hosted by WSB Radio personality Scott Slade on Georgia Public Broadcasting.  Fellow speakers were Scott Tigchelaar, President of Raleigh Studios Atlanta; A.D. Frazier, Partner at Alliance LLC; and Todd Bagarrly, a restaurant owner in Senoia, Ga.

Dr. Ries opposed the film tax credits arguing that they are bad investments for Georgia taxpayers.  Most states find that film tax credits return well less than 20 cents on the dollar for the taxpayers' investment.  She pointed out that these tax credits go to investors primarily from California and then to state tax coffers in Sacramento.

Dr. Ries is a Professor in the School of Economics at Georgia Tech.  Her research is primarily on corporations in the private sector of the global economy, but frequently works with governments, both local and abroad, to predict the impact of government policies on particular corporations, industries or other private enterprise sector.
