Schiphorst says about her forthcoming talk:
 
I have selected the title exquisite sensing to suggest the use of awareness and embodied perception in light of our interaction with ubiquitous and collaborative technologies. An exquisite sensing is finely tuned, discriminating, intense and yet also technically astute and accurate, not so much in the clinical sense, but in the lived and common sense.
 
My research invites a rethinking of the process of designing for technology based on the emerging somatic turn within Human Computer Interaction (Schiphorst, 2011). The somatic turn within HCI acknowledges design for the experience of the self (Zimmerman, 2009) and recognizes the interiority of human experience as an equal partner in technological design processes.

Thecla Schiphorst is a Media Artist/Designer and Associate Professor in the School of Interactive Arts and Technology at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada. Her background in dance performance and computing forms the basis for her research on embodied interaction, sense-making, and the aesthetics of interaction. She is particularly interested in the poetic forms that cultivate affect, materiality and experience-modeling within HCI. She is a member of the original design team that developed Life Forms, the computer compositional tool for choreography and has worked with Merce Cunningham since 1990 supporting his creation of new dance with the computer. She has an interdisciplinary MA in Dance & Computing Science from SFU, and a PhD from the School of Computing at the University of Plymouth.

She is the recipient of the 1998 PetroCanada award in New Media awarded biennially to a Canadian artist, by the Canada Council for the Arts, and 3 IDMA (International Digital Media Awards) in 1995 for immerce including best interface, best visual design and people's choice. Her media art installations have been exhibited internationally in Europe, Canada, the United States and Asia in many venues including Ars Electronica, the Dutch Electronic Arts Festival (DEAF), Future Physical, Siggraph, the Wexner Centre for the Arts, the Canadian Cultural Centre in Paris, and the London ICA. Thecla Schiphorst leads the whisper[s] research group an acronym for: wearable, handheld, intimate, sensory, personal, expressive, responsive systems. She is the principle investigator of a major SSHRC Institutional Partnership grant entitled, Moving Stories: Digital Tools for Movement, Meaning and Interaction.
