Healthy Places Research Group Meeting

Primary tabs

Using Technology to Measure and Promote Public Health

Presenters:  Michelle Lee, Westat (GeoStats Services Group); Ramachandra (Siva) Sivakumar, Georgia Tech Center for GIS (CGIS);  Gordon Zhang, Georgia Tech Center for GIS (CGIS);  Manoj Panguluru, Georgia Tech

Topic:   Please join us for the next HPRG meeting where we will discuss how to use  technology to assess health in the built environment. We will have two presentations on the topic. The first will be given by researchers from Georgia Tech's Center for GIS and will describe a new approach for finding an optimal walking route in an urban environment. Researchers will describe how they evaluated network segments by weighting the importance of attributes based on user choice and the existing characteristics of the built environment.

We will also hear about work from Westat (GeoStats Services Group) on the use of wearable GPS and accelerometry as a tool to assess physical activity as it relates to transportation. The presentation will highlight several studies where these technologies have been used by various populations (children, adults, obese persons) to answer different research questions.
