Institute Offers Free Lynda.com Training Courses

Primary tabs

Whether you’ve always wanted to learn how to use Adobe Photoshop or you’d like to learn the ins and outs of switching from a PC to a Mac, a new free service offered by Georgia Tech can provide you with training on a variety of software and technology topics.

Faculty, students and staff now have unlimited access to all of the online video training services offered by lynda.com.

“With lynda.com, you don’t have to sign up for any classes or sit in a classroom — you can take classes anytime and anywhere,” said JulieBeth Golden, asset and licensing officer for the Office of Information Technology (OIT).

Courses are offered in everything from home computing to business, and the service is free for all employees and students.

In 2011, the Board of Regents invited all University System of Georgia campuses to participate in a program that would provide lynda.com subscriptions to the institutions at a discounted rate.

“We interviewed groups on campus that had used the services before and worked with the vendor to learn all that we could,” Golden said. “What we discovered is that this is a wonderful program that universities across the country use.”

The student portion of the subscription is funded through Tech fees, while OIT is funding the faculty and staff portion. Unlimited use of the service will be available for a year, and if the service is popular, OIT will propose that the subscription be renewed.

Lynda.com offers more than 1,000 courses taught by industry experts. Courses are designed for all levels of learners and can also be accessed on iPhones and iPads.

Many courses are complemented with exercises that allow participants to review the concepts they’ve learned. Upon completion of each course, participants will receive a certificate of completion from lynda.com.

New courses are added weekly to ensure that training on the latest software and topics is available. To get started, visit Tech’s lynda.com site, enter your Tech login credentials to create an account and then start taking courses.
