Enjoy Local Spring Break without Springing Big Bucks

Primary tabs

After 10 long weeks of classes, exams, projects and activities, students will scatter for a week away from the Institute for spring break from March 19-23.

While the Institute does not close during this week, the dynamic on campus changes when thousands of classmates are away. However, there are many chances for students to enjoy their time in Atlanta if they aren’t traveling.

With St. Patrick’s Day falling on a Saturday this year and starting off the break, there are even more events than usual going on around the city that will enable students to enjoy their time away from usual responsibilities, even on a budget.

To start, take advantage of your student ID. Use this week as a chance to leverage discounts your BuzzCard provides but that you may not always have time to enjoy. A couples of places you get a better rate as a student include movie theaters, the Woodruff Arts Center and Zoo Atlanta.

Throughout the week:

  • Turner Field Tours Spring Training Special ($7): Just show up between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and you can take a tour of Turner Field and the Braves Museum and Hall of Fame for a reduced rate during the month of March.
  • Phoenix Flies (Free): The Atlanta Preservation Center hosts tours and events throughout the month at historic places around the city, a few of which are even on Tech’s campus.

Thursday, March 15:

  • Wrath of Con at Dad’s Garage ($8): For anyone who’s been to a sci-fi convention and enjoys general nerd-dom. Students get 50 percent off on Thursdays, making the regular $16 price only $8 with a student ID. Also showing Friday and Saturday, but without the student discount.
  • Tech Alumni House Tour (Free): Marilyn Somers from Tech’s Living History program will lead this storytelling and tour of the 100-year-old house, followed by a student-led traditions tour of campus.

Friday, March 16:

  • Childish Gambino ($25): For fans of NBC’s “Community,” Donald Glover raps under this pseudonym and will make a stop at the Tabernacle.
  • Baseball v. Virginia Tech (Free): The Yellow Jackets take on the Hokies at Russ Chandler Stadium at 6 p.m., and always appreciate fan support. If you're a faculty or staff member, this is also your appreciation day at the ballpark. Free with BuzzCard.

Saturday, March 17:

  • Baseball v. Virginia Tech (Free): Tech’s second matchup against the Hokies at 4 p.m. Spend a couple hours outside — it’s spring break, after all. Free with BuzzCard.
  • Softball v. Boston College (Free): A double-header against BC gives you two chances to support the Tech softball team. Free with BuzzCard at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
  • Atlanta St. Patrick’s Day Parade (Free): Put on your brightest green and join the parade, which starts just a bit south of campus.
  • Tour the Waffle House Museum (Free): Waffle House was founded right here in Atlanta by a fellow Yellow Jacket, and its museum in Avondale Estates offers free tours once a month.
  • Opening Weekend at Six Flags ($19.67 + Food Donation): Tickets are discounted during opening weekend, March 17-18, with the donation of six nonperishable food items.

Sunday, March 18:

Tuesday, March 20:

  • Permanent Residency Workshop (Free): For international students staying in town, get a heads up on information for work authorization and H1B.
  • Baseball at UGA ($5): Pay a visit to the Classic City and watch the Yellow Jackets take on the Bulldogs in Athens at 7 p.m. It’s a little more than an hour away and you can see how the other half lives.

Wednesday, March 21:

Thursday, March 22:

Friday, March 23:

  • Tax Workshop (Free): Perhaps not the most fun, but certainly necessary —this session for nonresidents will help you learn about filling out Georgia tax returns.
  • Men’s Tennis v. Boston College (Free): The Yellow Jackets are stuck facing the Eagles all week — this time in tennis, at 2:30 p.m.

Saturday, March 24:
