Chemistry LegoLand: Catalytic Annulation Approaches to Access Diverse Molecular Complexity in Small Molecule Synthesis

School Colloquium

A critical challenge in the field of organic synthesis is assembling large collections of diverse compounds for use as chemical building blocks, biological probes, therapeutics or organic materials.  Toward this end, based on diversity-oriented synthesis (DOS) strategies, several efficient and general approaches to distinct molecular skeletons will be discussed.  The seminar will highlight chemical modularity and versatility along a “mix-and-match” approach beginning with the development of novel catalytic ring-opening annulations of three-membered rings.  Next, innovative intramolecular Friedel-Crafts-type annulations for the divergent synthesis of N-fused heterocycles will be featured.  Finally, specific applications of the methods for the synthesis of biologically-relevant molecules and natural products will be showcased.
