New Pilot Evening Transportation Service Begins

Primary tabs

Georgia Tech Parking & Transportation offers many means of on-campus transportation including the Tech Trolley, Stinger Shuttle, and Stingerette Escort Services. In light of recent criminal activity off-campus, Parking and Transportation is temporarily adding a pilot transit program for off-campus transportation to assist Georgia Tech students who live in Home Park and Centennial Place Apartments. In addition, the department has made arrangements to facilitate taxi cab rides for students in need of safe transportation.

Home Park/Centennial Ride Home Service
The Home Park/Centennial Ride Home Service will provide evening transportation from campus to the Home Park and Centennial Place neighborhoods from 6:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. Students must purchase a 5 or 10 Ride Punch Card for $20 or $40, respectively. Each one-way ride equals one punch. Cards may be purchased Monday-Friday at the Parking & Transportation Office from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

It is important to note that this pilot program only serves those living in Home Park and Centennial Place neighborhoods. This off-campus transportation is limited to students leaving campus. No rides will be provided from these neighborhoods back to campus, nor will it provide rides solely within the neighborhoods. If needed, the Parking & Transportation Office will assist students by calling a taxi service for rides not covered by the Home Park/Centennial Ride Home Service. The taxi fare must be paid by the user.

The success of the program will be evaluated during fall semester based on the demand levels for the extra service and the impact of the program on the existing on-campus Stingerette service.

Taxi Service
By calling 5-RIDE (404.385.7433) patrons will be assisted in facilitating a taxi cab ride to and from off-campus destinations. General user fees are $2.50 initially, $2 per mile, and an additional $2 per person for more than one person, plus gratuity. Taxi fare may be paid with cash or credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express).

As a reminder, the Stingerette Escort Service provides safe, after hours transportation for Georgia Tech students, faculty, and staff, and is intended for use when safe, alternative travel is not available. This service is limited to transportation between Georgia Tech operated living accommodations, academic buildings, and Georgia Tech facilities situated within the defined campus boundaries.

The Stingerette Escort Service is available Monday through Sunday between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., provided Georgia Tech is in normal operation. Service requests are taken until 6:30 a.m.

To coordinate Stingerette Escort Service, students should telephone 404-385-RIDE (7433) and provide the dispatcher with the following information:
* number of people needing an escort
* current building location
* destination address

The dispatcher will advise of the pick-up location for that building as well as the approximate arrival time of the Stingerette van. Van drivers are instructed to wait two minutes only at any pick-up point. Students are encouraged to await the van, in obvious sight of the driver, at the pickup location.

It is important to note that the Stingerette Escort Service is available for groups of four or fewer passengers. Larger groups are advised to contact local taxi or charter services. In addition, Stingerette Escort Services are available only to campus locations served by the Trolleys and Stingers after normal operations for these units have ended. This includes the MARTA Midtown Station. The Stingerette is not available for service to or from retail establishments, entertainment venues, private residences, social functions, hospitals, clinics, transportation centers or other off-campus locations. Lastly, Stingerette drivers are not trained nor are their vehicles equipped to manage emergency health situations. If an emergency arises, contact Campus Police (404.894.2500) or dial 911.

For more information about these services, visit the Parking & Transportation Web site or call 5-PARK (404.385.7275) or 5-RIDE (404.385.7433).
