Bacteria use this process, called quorum sensing, to synchronize their behavior and act like multicellular organisms.  The Hammer lab is studying the role of quorum sensing in the environmental lifestyle of the aquatic microbe, Vibrio cholerae, which causes the fatal disease cholera.
