The group has demonstrated their work on a wide range of applications such as Autonomous Systems, Medical Imaging, and Subsurface Imaging. The group is interested in advancing the fundamentals as well as the deployment of such systems in real-world scenarios.\u0026nbsp;His research group is working on projects related to machine learning, image and video processing, image and video understanding, subsurface imaging, perception in visual data processing, healthcare intelligence, and video analytics. The primary applications of the research span from Autonomous Vehicles to Portable AI-based Ophthalmology and Eye Exam and from Microscopic Imaging to Seismic Interpretation. The group has been a leader in developing modern machine learning for seismic interpretation. Kemp joined the faculty at Georgia Tech in 2006 after completing postdoctoral training at MIT. Her expertise is in computational modeling of metabolism and signal transduction, as well as developing statistical modeling tools to examine network relationships in high-dimension datasets. One major aspect of her research program linking ROS \u2013 the byproducts of aerobic metabolism \u2013 to the fundamental way that cells interpret instructions from their environment, their neighbors, and their own genetic blueprint. Specific applications of her diverse work include systems modeling of transient phosphatase oxidation of kinase cascades, patient-specific differences in cytotoxicity to redox-cycled chemotherapeutics and radiation, and the coordination of oxidative metabolism with epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition. Her research program also includes a component of developing high-throughput screening methods for assaying cue-signal-response relationships in cells and analytical tools for single cell gene expression.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EKemp currently serves as the Research Director of the multi-site NSF Engineering Research Center \u201cCell Manufacturing Technologies\u201d. In her former role as Associate Director of the NSF Science and Technology Center \u201cEmergent Behavior of Integrated Cellular Systems,\u201d she spearheaded the multi-site center\u2019s computational activities by developing agent-based models of context-dependent cellular decisions to generate new hypotheses of intercellular communication in pluripotent stem cell differentiation and emergent patterning; this work continues currently in quantifying organizational principles and spatial relationships in iPSC-derived tissues from multi-omics data. Kemp\u2019s career honors include a Whitaker Graduate Fellowship, Merck\/CSBi postdoctoral fellowship, Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Scholar, NIH New Innovator Award, and the CSB2 Prize for Innovative Measurement Methods from the Council for Systems Biology in Boston.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003EThe \u003C\/em\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/sites.gatech.edu\/soda\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cem\u003ESpatial Omics and Data Analytics (SODA) Center\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u003Cem\u003E meets monthly for networking, information transfer, and active partnership formation. However, translating these technologies into clinical practice remains challenging, partly because conventional preclinical models do not fully capture the biological complexity of naturally occurring cancers. Our research integrates focused ultrasound, nanomedicine, and comparative oncology within a One-Medicine framework to accelerate therapeutic development for both human and veterinary patients. We are investigating multiple ultrasound modalities, including hyperthermia, thermal ablation, and histotripsy, and their potential to enhance the therapeutic efficacy of chemotherapy, radiation, and immunomodulatory nanomedicines. These approaches are designed not only to improve local tumor control but also to stimulate systemic antitumor immune responses and address metastatic disease. Building on mechanistic studies in preclinical models, we are translating these technologies into clinical trials involving companion animals with naturally occurring cancers through the Veterinary Research and Oncology Clinic (VROC) at UT Southwestern. This presentation will highlight our progress in developing ultrasound-based combination therapies, the challenges of clinical translation, and the opportunities offered by comparative oncology to accelerate therapeutic innovations across species.\u003Cbr\u003E\u003Cbr\u003EBIO\u003Cbr\u003EAshish Ranjan is an Endowed Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology. He also serves as Vice Chair for Comparative Oncology and Research Innovation and Director of the Veterinary Research and Oncology Clinic. He earned his B.V.Sc. degree (DVM equivalent) from Madras Veterinary College, in Chennai, India, followed by a Ph.D. in biomedical and veterinary sciences from Virginia Tech. Ranjan was then a visiting fellow at the Center for Interventional Oncology, Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ERanjan\u0027s research interests are in the application of device-directed nanoparticles for solid tumor chemo-immunotherapy. His lab is actively engaged in preclinical and bench-to-bedside veterinary clinical trials and has received funding from several federal, state, and private sources. Ranjan has received several distinguished awards, including the NIH Merit Award. We have shown that by using MAA-PEG (poly(methacrylic acid-co-polyethylene glycol), 20 mol% MAA) as a vascular regenerative injectable hydrogel, the subcutaneous space becomes an attractive, minimally invasive site for pancreatic islet transplantation. Without the vessels induced by MAA-PEG, the avascular nature of the transplant site and its unique immune response normally precludes islet survival. MAA-PEG also modulates the immune response, so that many islets (but not all) withstand the hypoxia of the first few days before vessels form. Building on work by Babensee, we are focused on using tolerogenic dendritic cells to induce tolerance, while also taking another look at the key features of a host response that results in the generation of vessels and nerves, without fibrosis.\u003Cbr\u003E\u003Cbr\u003EI will also introduce the concept of Regenerative Healing, derived from conversations with indigenous knowledge holders in Canada. We recently revealed that the PIEZO1 mechanosensing axis actively safeguards membrane integrity through a hierarchical, two-layer mechanoprotective mechanism. This involves rapid architectural buffering followed by a calcium-dependent positive feedback loop engaging Calmodulin and Filamin A to reinforce cortical stability. This fundamental discovery in mechanoprotection serves as the blueprint for our translational innovations in \u0022Thrombo-protective Oncology.\u0022 By engineering a microfluidic \u0022CAT-on-chip\u0022 to recapitulate venous shear stress, we discovered that metastatic cancer cells exploit a strikingly similar mechanobiological network to trigger pathological clotting. Specifically, tumor-induced hypercoagulation is driven by a Focal Adhesion Kinase (FAK)-Calmodulin (CaM) axis, which structurally \u0022decrypts\u0022 Tissue Factor (TF) by disengaging it from cytoskeletal Filamin A. To translate these microfluidic discoveries into clinical practice, we developed \u0022SmartClot\u0022, an AI-driven Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) platform that rapidly stratifies cancer-driven thrombotic risk using blood diffusion kinetics. This seminar will highlight how decoding fundamental nanoscale mechanosensing paves the way for next-generation diagnostic and therapeutic technologies.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EBIO\u003Cbr\u003EProfessor Lining Arnold Ju (PhD, GAICD, FHEA) is a Snow Fellow, Australian Heart Foundation Future Leader Fellow, and recipient of the Australian Academy of Science John Booker Medal. He received his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Georgia Tech and Emory University in 2013 and now directs the Mechanobiology and Biomechanics Laboratory (MBL) at the University of Sydney\u0027s School of Biomedical Engineering.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EJu\u2019s research operates at the intersection of fundamental mechanobiology and biomedical engineering. Natural Products are at the forefront of fighting the global epidemic of antibiotic resistant pathogens, and keeping the inventory of clinically applicable pharmaceuticals stocked up. She is the recipient of several awards including the NSF CAREER Award, the Office of Naval Research (ONR) Young Investigator Award, the NIH Trailblazer Award, and the NIH Director\u2019s New Innovator Award. Cui develops new tools to study the nano-bio interface, membrane curvature, electrophysiology, and signal transduction in cells at normal and disease conditions. As a scientist and a teacher, she enjoys working with young scholars to explore the natural world with scientific innovations. Research in her group spans the disciplines of biophysics, cell biology, chemistry, material science, nanotechnology, and neurobiology. He develops synthetic and polymeric materials that mimic the chemistry of natural systems, such as mussel adhesion, for applications in surgery, wound healing, and drug delivery. Messersmith\u2019s work integrates chemistry, biology, and materials science to design multifunctional biomaterials that interface seamlessly with tissues. His research advances the understanding of biological interfacial phenomena and informs the development of new approaches to tissue repair and regeneration.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EHe is Professor of Bioengineering and Materials Science at UC Berkeley and Faculty Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, the Materials Research Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
