Spectroscopy of a New Class of Fluorescent Dyes

Abstract

A new class of dyes, annulated derivatives of xanthenes, will be described. These new fluorescent dyes will be discussed with regard to their unique structures and unusual spectroscopic properties. We have observed that the spectral properties of these dyes are dramatically different from most currently known xanthene derivatives. For example, the absorption spectra are generally broad, and these dyes can easily be excited between the regions of 260 nm to 650 nm. The emission characteristics are also broad, vary between dyes, and are solvent and pH dependent. In fact, at least two of these dyes emit white light, i.e. over the entire visible range. In contrast to many white light emitters, these dyes tend to have structured emission spectra. For example, one of the dyes emits white light via a lambda maxima of approximately equal intensities within the red, green, and blue spectral regions. Another dye emits well into the near IR region.
