<p>Tailoring Viruses as Polyvalent Scaffolds
</p>
<p>Abstract:  Viruses represent the largest structures routinely characterized by x-ray crystallography, while possessing genomes susceptible to manipulation. They therefore comprise a unique bridge between chemistry and biology. We have shown that several icosahedral viruses participate in predictable (or at least explainable) chemical reactions, with reactivity programmed by genetic changes to the coat protein structure. Techniques for virus manipulation, chemical conjugation, and directed packaging will be described, along with applications to biological targets involving polyvalent binding.
