India Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh presented the award to Roy\nat the 57th IIT KGP Convocation last fall.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003ERoy, president\nand chief executive officer of the International Fertilizer Development Center\n(IFDC) in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, has spent more than 30 years fighting the\nglobal war on hunger. His weapon against the formidable problem is NPK, which\nsounds a lot more intimidating than what the acronym represents\u2014nitrogen (N),\nphosphorous (P), and potassium (K)\u2014the essential elements of fertilizer. These\nthree nutrients combine with about 20 other secondary or \u201ctrace\u201d minerals, such\nas copper, iron, manganese, zinc, and boron, to form the right combinations of\nnutrients required for plants to grow, flourish, and produce viable feedstock.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cAbout half of\nthe world\u2019s population is alive today because of increased food production\nfueled by mineral fertilizers,\u201d Roy says, who joined the IFDC in 1978 as a\nchemical engineer and special projects engineer. Over the years, Roy has earned\nrespect as one of the world\u2019s leading experts on fertilizer technologies and\nsolutions.
