In this course taught by LCC Professor Hugh Crawford, Building Construction majors, as well as students from other disciplines, studied writers who built small houses situated in nature and described their lives there: Henry David Thoreau, Henry Beston, and Bernd Heinrich.  A key discovery was that each of the writer's houses was built utilizing a different technique -- timber frame, dimensional lumber, and log.  Students divided into three teams, each team researching an author's life and writing, studying the history and cultural implications of each building technique, and designing and building a children's playhouse in that particular style. They are an interesting example of interdisciplinary work, hands on learning, and service learning.

The structures are on display in the courtyard. 

Posters sessions will be held Wednesday, December 14 from 11:00am – 1:00pm.  All are welcome.

The structures will eventually be auctioned off for charity.
