{"73310":{"#nid":"73310","#data":{"type":"news","title":"In Loving Memory of Scott Wills","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EIt is with great sadness that we share with you that our dear friend\nand colleague, Scott Wills, died on the morning of Friday, December 2 after a\nlong, brave battle with melanoma.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EKnown for his great enthusiasm and passion for his students and love\nof learning, Dr. Wills joined the faculty of the School of Electrical and\nComputer Engineering (ECE) at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1991. He\ntaught in the area of computer engineering, including the introduction to computer\nengineering course and courses in mechanisms for computing systems, computer\narchitecture, and embedded video surveillance.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EA very popular, award-winning teacher, Dr. Wills taught almost 2,900\nstudents in 83 classes. Most recently, in 2009, he was honored with the Georgia\nTech Outstanding Innovative Use of Education Technology Award, which he\nreceived with his wife and collaborator, Linda Wills, and the School of ECE Richard M. Bass\/Eta Kappa Nu Outstanding\nTeacher Award, which is determined by a majority vote of the ECE senior class.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EDr. Wills\u2019 research interests were in the areas of embedded surveillance\nsystems, portable image processing architectures, and supercomputer\ninterconnection networks. He and Dr. Linda Wills co-led the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ece.gatech.edu\/research\/pica\/\u0022\u003EMobile Vision Embedded Systems\n(MOVES)\u003C\/a\u003E research group. During his career, Dr. Wills graduated 23 Ph.D.\nstudents and seven master\u2019s students and supervised over 24 undergraduate\nresearchers. One-third of his doctoral students are in university positions and\ntwo-thirds have joined leading electronics companies, including Intel,\nMotorola, Qualcomm, Samsung, and Sarnoff Corporation.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EA passionate advocate for engineering education, Dr. Wills was a\nleader in defining the new computer engineering curriculum within the School of\nECE. He was also a leader in education on the Institute level, serving on the\nInstitute Undergraduate Curriculum Committee from 1999-2005 and as its chair\nfor two years, 2003-2005, and he served on the Institute Graduate Curriculum\nCommittee, 2005-2007. He also served on the Joint College of Computing\/College\nof Engineering committees that formed the Computational Science and Engineering\nProgram and the Software Engineering certificate.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EOne of Dr. Wills\u2019 students once said of him, \u201cI don\u2019t know of any\nother person who has better infused in students the passion for the subject that\nhe or she possesses.\u201d Dr. Wills\u2019 personal concern for students and his\nunselfish efforts to creating classes with appropriate, innovative uses of\nmodern IT have been inspirational to students and faculty alike.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EMemorial\nService Information\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EFuneral\nservices for Scott Wills will be held on Monday, December 5 and also on\nTuesday, December 6.
