{"70325":{"#nid":"70325","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Students Acknowledge Green Initiatives, Seek Ways to Achieve More","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003EBy Ben Goldberg, Contributing Writer, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/nique.net\u0022\u003EThe Technique\n\n\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIt is a tremendous feat that a university like Tech that is dedicated to math and sciences, ranks among the top institutions in the country dedicated to promoting green technology initiatives.\n\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAccording to the most recent 2011 Princeton Review poll of the greenest college campuses, Tech attained the highest possible score and was placed on the Green College Honor Roll with only fifteen other colleges that displayed outstanding commitment to sustainable living.\n\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAs the campus transforms to meet the needs of global resourcefulness, students are noticing the difference.\n\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cIt\u2019s hard to be \u2018green\u2019 in the middle of a city, and it\u2019s easy to ask how we can conserve, but I definitely think it\u2019s a priority for our campus and I appreciate the initiatives we\u2019ve taken,\u201d said Sebastian Tadjuddin, a fourth-year IE.\n\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn 2008 Tech was recognized as a \u201cTree Campus USA\u201d campus by the Arbor Day Foundation \u2013 a notable accomplishment for an urban location.\n\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ETech requires all vendors to provide green products, its cleaning equipment uses seventy percent less water and ninety percent less chemicals than traditional equipment and the recently instated tray-less system further reduces water consumption.\n\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201c[Georgia Tech] has made it a lot more convenient to recycle and be green,\u201d said Melaena Roberts, a second-year CS. \u201cAt home it can be a pain to recycle, but it\u2019s nice that they have the multi-option bins in the Clough Commons even though the bin that says \u2018Landfill\u2019 makes me feel guilty.\u201d\n\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cIt\u2019s not like I\u2019m on a crusade or anything,\u201d said Daniel Hamilton, a third-year CMPE. \u201c My roommates and I try to recycle milk jugs and paper whenever we can.\u201d\n\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAccording to the Princeton Review, Tech\u2019s inaugural football game day recycling program collected nearly twelve tons of aluminum cans, glass and plastic bottles from home game attendees.\n\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EWhile recycling is a significant part of green living, some students believe it is the only method in which they are able to help the cause.\n\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cI would probably do more than just recycle if I knew more about the situation,\u201d said Nick Beyer, a second-year ME. \u201cMore research into the benefits of being green and the consequences of not would inspire me to do more.\u201d\n\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cAll resources are limited and it\u2019s great that Tech is doing what it can.\u201d said Logan Carpenter, a first-year ME, when asked if there were enough recycling initiatives on campus. \u201cWe should do more, but sometimes I forget about ways I can contribute.\u201d\n\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EBen Merva, a second-year BIO said, \u201cI do what I can.
