{"70198":{"#nid":"70198","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Students Organize First Georgia Tech Bike Week","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThough Monday will begin five days of celebration for the use of two-wheeled transportation on campus, you need not own a\nbicycle to enjoy the offerings of Bike Week.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Bicycle Infrastructure\nImprovement Committee (BIIC) crafted events with both current and potential\ncyclists in mind throughout the week of Sept. 26\u201330:\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAll week:\u003C\/strong\u003E Free maintenance and information on Tech\nWalk (provided by the Bicycle Infrastructure Improvement Committee, Starter\nBikes, Students Organizing for Sustainability, Students for Progressive Transit\nand the GT Cycling Club); \u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ETuesday:\u003C\/strong\u003E Bicycle Scavenger Hunt (pick up materials\nfrom 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Tech Walk)\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWednesday:\u003C\/strong\u003E Heels on Wheels bike ride (a female ride,\nbeginning at 6 p.m. in front of the Ferst Center)\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EThursday: \u003C\/strong\u003EBike Fashion Show (11 a.m. in the Free\nSpeech Area); Town Hall Forum (discussion of what campus needs for cyclists and\ncycling infrastructure, beginning at 6 p.m. in room 320 of the Student Center)\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EFriday:\u003C\/strong\u003E Tour de Tech (a casual ride beginning at 6\np.m. at the Central Campus Transit Hub behind Skiles)\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThroughout the week, cyclists\nwill participate in a commuter challenge, logging their mileage at \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/bike.gatech.edu\u0022\u003Ebike.gatech.edu\u003C\/a\u003E. Departments will compete for the highest participation\nand mileage quantities, with the grand prize of a commemorative bike rack\ninstalled at the winning department\u2019s building. Other prizes will be distributed throughout the week, including t-shirts, gift cards to local businesses and bike-related\ngear.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe BIIC has implemented many\nchanges on campus since its formation last year, including new bike lanes on\nFerst Drive and Hemphill Avenue, sharrows throughout campus streets and new\nbike racks in various locations. The group also built and maintains \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/bike.gatech.edu\u0022\u003Ebike.gatech.edu\u003C\/a\u003E, an online resource for all things bike-related at\nTech.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cFor those who don\u2019t ride and\ndon\u2019t intend to ride, we\u2019d still encourage you to come and check out the\n\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/gt.viacycle.com\u0022\u003EviaCycle\u003C\/a\u003E bikes [on Tech Walk], and to give us your feedback for how we can make\ncampus better for non-cyclists as well,\u201d said Johann Weber, BIIC chair.\nviaCycle is Tech\u2019s pilot bike share program that enables users to have access\nto communal bikes on campus.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EPresident G. P. \u201cBud\u201d\nPeterson and Mrs. Valerie Peterson will join Friday\u2019s Tour de Tech as cyclists\nride through campus to see improvements already made for bikes and talk about\nwhat\u2019s to come.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cOur number one goal is\nalways more cyclists. It saves the university money, and it\u2019s a healthier and\nmore environmental commute,\u201d Weber said.
