{"69650":{"#nid":"69650","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Science Fiction Author, Tech Grad Returns to Host Book Reading Event Sept. 1","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EScience fiction novelist and\nGeorgia Tech alumnus, Dr. Anthony Francis, will return to campus at 11 a.m.\nThursday, Sept. 1 for a book reading of his two latest works \u2013 \u201cFrost Moon\u201d and \u0022Blood Rock.\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EPresented by the Library\u2019s\nFaculty Engagement Department and the Tech Square Barnes \u0026amp; Noble, this book\nreading will take place in the Georgia Tech Library Neely Room and is open to\nthe public.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThe Library is proud of all\nour Tech alumni and we welcome the opportunity to showcase their publication\nsuccesses,\u201d said Crystal Renfro, librarian in the Faculty Engagement\nDepartment. Renfro organized the book reading after reading a news story online\nabout Francis receiving a 2011 EPIC\u0026nbsp;\n(Electronic Publishing Industry Coalition) Award for \u201cFrost Moon.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWe are lucky enough to have\nhim return to campus to share his latest creative works,\u201d said Renfro.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EBoth \u201cFrost Moon\u201d and \u201cBlood\nRock\u201d have received rave review from readers and critics alike. Tech Librarian\nand avid book reviewer Mary Axford commented that \u201cFrost Moon\u201d is an excellent\nfirst novel centering on Dakota Frost, a tattoo artist who creates magical\ntattoos with herself as her best canvas. Her tattoos move, store and release\nmagical energy, and can be transferred from herself to someone else.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cFrost Moon\u201d and \u201cBlood\nRock\u201d are the first two installments of his urban fantasy trilogy called \u201cThe\nSkindancer Series.\u201d According to Dakota Frost\u0027s Web site, \u201ceach book in the\nseries highlights a new form of magic based on alternative culture practices\nlike tattooing, graffiti or firespinning, and each highlights a new\nsupernatural creature like werewolves, vampires and dragons.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EBy day, Francis puts his\nGeorgia Tech education to work as software developer for Google. By nightfall,\nhe writes edgy science fiction novels, most recently about a subculture set in\nan alternative Atlanta. His characters visit many local landmarks including\nEmory University, Georgia Tech and Stone Mountain to name a few.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cI definitely want to write\nscience fiction full time,\u201d said Francis, who graduated from Tech in 2000 with\na Ph.D. in Computer Science. \u201cBut Google lets me work on search engines,\ncomputer vision and robots.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;It was here at Georgia Tech that he wrote his first novel titled \u201chomo\ncentauris.\u201d Francis recalls his fondest memories as a Tech student are of\nworking on code in the old Rich building, taking classes, attending talks and\npresentations during graduate school and the robotics work he did in the\nCollege of Computing.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cMy urban fantasy work is\nbased on the principle that if magic was real, then magic would be real,\u201d\nFrancis explained. \u201cThat means magic would have real physical consequences\nwhich could be explored, even if the ultimate truth of magic was more mystical\nand bizarre that the strangest twists we\u2019ve found in quantum mechanics.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EOne attendee will receive\na free pass to Dragon*Con, the largest convention of science fiction, comics,\ngaming, film, art and music in Atlanta, September 2-5.
