Taking Really Large Steps in Imaginary Time

Miles Stoudenmire is a Research Scientist at the Flatiron Institute’s Center for Computational Quantum Physics (CCQ) in New York City. He earned his PhD in physics from the University of California, Santa Barbara, followed by postdoctoral studies at UC Irvine and the Perimeter Institute. His research centers on tensor network methods applied to many-body quantum systems such as strongly correlated fermions. He is also a core developer of ITensor, a widely used software library.

      <value>
A somewhat overlooked feature of imaginary time is that, because it naturally compresses the energy content of a state, larger time steps are allowed at later times, even exponentially larger steps. I will show how this insight can be harnessed through time-stepping methods with a ‘stability’ property, allowing long imaginary times of thousands or more (i.e. very low temperatures with high precision) to be reached easily. A key demonstration of the method is accurately capturing universal finite-temperature physics of the Anderson impurity model below the exponentially-decreasing Kondo scale. I will end by offering perspectives about where this work could be applied next.
</value>
