Registration Open: Author to Examine Social Impacts of AI During Upcoming Event

Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing not only how people work with technology but also how emerging technologies intersect with history, culture, and the systems that shape society.

These questions will be at the center of a conversation with Kamau Bobb, senior director of Georgia Tech’s Constellations Center for Education in Computing, on Oct. 16, as part of the CTRL+CM Speaker Series.

Bobb will discuss his new book, The Bullwhip's Algorithm: Artificial Intelligence and America's Racial Caste System, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Scholars Event Theater at Price Gilbert Library. Lunch will be provided, and registration is required.

Drawing on the themes of his book, Bobb will examine the connections among AI, public policy, education, and social systems. The discussion will consider both the opportunities and challenges posed by emerging technologies and the responsibilities that accompany their development and use.

Bobb brings experience spanning higher education, government, and industry to the conversation.

He is the founding senior director of Georgia Tech’s Constellations Center for Education in Computing, which opened in 2017. Before joining Georgia Tech, he served as director of STEM Education Strategy and Research at Google, a program officer in the National Science Foundation’s Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering, and director of the STEM Initiative for the University System of Georgia. He also served on President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper STEM Task Force.

He earned a Ph.D. in science and technology policy from Georgia Tech and master’s and bachelor’s degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.

The speaking engagement follows Bobb’s September appearance at the Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing in Atlanta. He co-headlined a session with data scientist and Tapia co-founder Valerie Thomas on AI and its impact on underrepresented groups, a topic also explored in his book.

The Constellations Center’s Collective Impact Creative Technology program organizes the CTRL+CM Speaker Series. The Oct. 16 event is open to those interested in AI, computing, education, public policy, and the social impact of emerging technologies.

Register for the Oct. 16 event.
