Open Source Program Offices’ Virtual Summer Internship Closes with Scientific Software Research Poster Session

Scientific and engineering simulations often require specialized software to run, and this software is often developed by academic researchers, especially if it uses cutting-edge techniques that have not yet been widely adopted. Georgia Tech is among the leading institutions in the development of research software, and Georgia Tech software is used by many thousands of researchers worldwide. On September 10, the Institute for Data Engineering and Science (IDEaS) and the Open Source Program Office (OSPO) hosted a Scientific Software Poster session to showcase some of the research software being developed at Georgia Tech. The software presented spanned a wide range of domains, including fluid dynamics, protein folding, chemistry, support tools for high-performance computing, and experimental computer hardware support and design. Several poster presenters were participants in OSPO’s Virtual Summer Internship Program, a 10 week program where 24 students learned software engineering and open source contribution skills and made contributions to GT- and community-focused open source projects.

Jeff Young, OSPO director, noted, "We had several attendees who noted the diversity of scientific software that was covered by our summer program and by Georgia Tech students in general. I believe this breadth speaks to the broad interests of our student researchers as well as the impact of Georgia Tech researchers on the wider open-source software community."
