{"692473":{"#nid":"692473","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Professor, Alumni Receive Award for Edge Computing Research ","body":[{"value":"\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003EA Georgia Tech research team was recently recognized for an influential paper that helped define how applications could run efficiently outside the cloud.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe team received the 10-Year Test of Time Award at the 20th ACM International Conference on Distributed and Event-Based Systems (DEBS 2026) in July.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003EProfessor \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/sites.cc.gatech.edu\/fac\/Kishore.Ramachandran\/homepage.html\u0022\u003EUmakishore Ramachandran\u003C\/a\u003E and his former Ph.D. students \u2013 \u003Cstrong\u003EEnrique Saurez\u003C\/strong\u003E, \u003Cstrong\u003EKirak Hong\u003C\/strong\u003E, \u003Cstrong\u003EDave Lillethun\u003C\/strong\u003E, and \u003Cstrong\u003EBeate Ottenw\u00e4lder\u003C\/strong\u003E \u2013 were recognized for their 2016 paper, \u003Cem\u003EIncremental Deployment and Migration of Geo-distributed\u003C\/em\u003E \u003Cem\u003ESituation Awareness Applications in the Fog. \u003C\/em\u003ESaurez, now a researcher at Microsoft, was the lead author of the paper.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003EMost of a person\u2019s daily internet use, such as sending emails or shopping, runs through the cloud. Cloud computing does have latency issues, but this is typically not perceptible to people. However, in situation-awareness applications, such as virtual reality or autonomous vehicles, this latency becomes a barrier. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cCloud computing is not appropriate for these latency-sensitive applications where events occur at computational perception speeds as opposed to human perception speeds. And this is the reason that edge computing became important,\u201d Ramachandran said. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003ERather than using the cloud, edge computing brings computation closer to the data source. This method reduces latency and backhaul bandwidth consumption. Beyond latency reduction, edge computing offers other advantages over the cloud.
