{"692070":{"#nid":"692070","#data":{"type":"news","title":"CSE Leadership Transition Comes as School Continues Rapid Growth","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech\u2019s School of Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) has undergone remarkable expansion in recent years, doubling its faculty, broadening its programs and curriculum, and strengthening its reputation as a leading research hub.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ENow, as Professor \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/faculty.cc.gatech.edu\/~echow\/\u0022\u003EEdmond Chow\u003C\/a\u003E prepares to teach at Georgia Tech-Europe for the 2026-2027 academic year, Professor \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/poloclub.github.io\/polochau\/\u0022\u003EPolo Chau\u003C\/a\u003E is stepping into the role of associate chair to help guide the School\u2019s next phase of growth.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ETheir leadership transition comes at a time when demand for expertise in artificial intelligence (AI), data science and analytics, and high-performance computing accelerates across industry, government, and academia.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cOn behalf of the students, faculty, and staff of CSE, I extend our heartfelt gratitude to Edmond for his years of dedicated service as associate chair,\u201d said School of CSE Regents\u2019 Professor and Chair \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/faculty.cc.gatech.edu\/~hpark\/\u0022\u003EHaesun Park\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cPolo is a respected leader, an accomplished scholar, and a passionate advocate for our community. I am confident he will build on Edmond\u2019s strong foundation to guide the School\u0027s continued success.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe School of CSE associate chair helps lead faculty development, academic planning, and new initiatives. These responsibilities include course scheduling, teaching assignments, and reviewing proposals for new courses.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ERapid growth defined Chow\u2019s tenure as associate chair, which started in summer 2021.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAs associate chair, Chow led CSE\u2019s faculty recruiting committee. The School hired 15 new professors during his term, doubling the faculty in that span.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EChow\u2019s relationship with new hires didn\u2019t end with recruiting. Each new professor needed support to onboard smoothly, which he helped facilitate by pairing new hires with faculty mentors in the School.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EChow helped new and veteran faculty alike design courses centered on their expertise and the field\u0027s emerging needs. As a result, he broadened and enriched the CSE curriculum at Georgia Tech.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EChow led CSE\u2019s effort to secure space in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cse.gatech.edu\/coda\u0022\u003ECoda Building\u003C\/a\u003E to accommodate so many new faculty and students. With his help, the School added the east wing of the 13th floor and space for four labs on the fifth floor.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EWhile at \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/europe.gatech.edu\/en\u0022\u003EGeorgia Tech-Europe\u003C\/a\u003E, Chow will teach \u003Cem\u003ECS 7545: Machine Learning Theory\u003C\/em\u003E and \u003Cem\u003ECS 1371: Computing for Engineers\u003C\/em\u003E.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EChow is a fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.siam.org\/\u0022\u003ESIAM\u003C\/a\u003E). Like CSE, the professional society recognized Chow\u2019s leadership and administrative talents, selecting him for several roles.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EWith his associate chair responsibilities concluded, Chow will focus more on his role as SIAM\u2019s vice president for programs. He also co-chairs the organizing committee for the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.siam.org\/conferences-events\/siam-conferences\/cse27\/\u0022\u003ESIAM Conference on CSE\u003C\/a\u003E, to be held Feb. 22-26, 2027, in Pittsburgh.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EPreviously, Chow served as vice chair of the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.siam.org\/get-involved\/connect-with-a-community\/activity-groups\/computational-science-and-engineering\/\u0022\u003ESIAM Activity Group on CSE\u003C\/a\u003E from 2025 to 2026. He co-chaired the organizing committee for \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.siam.org\/conferences-events\/past-event-archive\/an22\/\u0022\u003ESIAM\u2019s 2022 annual meeting\u003C\/a\u003E.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0022It has been an honor to serve CSE,\u201d Chow said. \u201cI am also inspired to have worked alongside others, including Haesun, who care so much for the School.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ESince joining Georgia Tech in 2012, Chau has distinguished himself as a leading expert in data science and AI.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EChau\u2019s research combines machine learning and visualization to create scalable, interactive tools. His lab has developed applications for studying massive datasets, interpreting complex AI models, and solving real-world problems in cybersecurity, human-centered AI, graph visualization and mining, and social good.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EChau has taught CSE \u003Cem\u003E4242\/6242: Data and Visual Analytics\u003C\/em\u003E since 2013. The course has grown into the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/poloclub.github.io\/#cse6242\u0022\u003Eworld\u0027s largest semester-long university class on the subject\u003C\/a\u003E. More than 19,600 students have taken the course throughout its history.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAlongside his research and teaching, Chau has held several leadership roles at Georgia Tech.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ESince 2014, Chau has served as associate director of Georgia Tech\u2019s \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.analytics.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EM.S. Analytics program\u003C\/a\u003E. The program celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2024, when he received the Innovator Award for his leadership and pioneering approaches to analytics education.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn 2019, Chau accepted roles as director of industry relations for the Institute for Data Engineering and Science (\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/ideas.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EIDEaS\u003C\/a\u003E) and as associate director of corporate relations for the Machine Learning Center (\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/ml.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EML@GT\u003C\/a\u003E). Chau recently stepped down from his leadership positions with IDEaS and ML@GT to accommodate his responsibilities as CSE\u2019s associate chair.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cI enjoy building deep connections with people, and this role provides a lot of opportunities to do that,\u201d Chau said. \u201cFaculty development helps my colleagues build the careers that they want, and collectively shape CSE\u2019s future.
