(1929) and Jean M. Hayes Associate Professor at \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/mit.edu\/about\/\u0022\u003EMIT\u003C\/a\u003E, where he holds dual appointments in the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/meche.mit.edu\/people\/faculty\/azizan@mit.edu\u0022\u003EDepartment of Mechanical Engineering\u003C\/a\u003E (in \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/meche.mit.edu\/research\/controls\u0022\u003EControl, Instrumentation \u0026amp; Robotics\u003C\/a\u003E) and the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/computing.mit.edu\/faculty\/new-incoming-faculty-2020\/\u0022\u003ESchwarzman College of Computing\u003C\/a\u003E\u0027s \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/idss.mit.edu\/people\/faculty\/core-faculty\u0022\u003EInstitute for Data, Systems \u0026amp; Society (IDSS)\u003C\/a\u003E and is a Principal Investigator in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/lids.mit.edu\/people\/faculty-pi\u0022\u003ELaboratory for Information \u0026amp; Decision Systems (LIDS)\u003C\/a\u003E. He is also a core faculty member of the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/stat.mit.edu\/core\/\u0022\u003EStatistics and Data Science Center\u003C\/a\u003E and the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cse.mit.edu\/people\/navid-azizan\/\u0022\u003ECenter for Computational Science and Engineering\u003C\/a\u003E. His research interests broadly lie in machine learning, systems and control, and mathematical optimization. His research lab focuses on various aspects of reliable AI systems, with applications to high-stakes and safety-critical settings. He obtained his PhD in \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cms.caltech.edu\/\u0022\u003EComputing and Mathematical Sciences (CMS)\u003C\/a\u003E from the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/California_Institute_of_Technology\u0022\u003ECalifornia Institute of Technology (Caltech)\u003C\/a\u003E in 2020, his MSc in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California in 2015, and his BSc in electrical engineering and physics from Sharif University of Technology in 2013. Prior to joining MIT, he completed a postdoc at \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.stanford.edu\/\u0022\u003EStanford University\u003C\/a\u003E in 2021. Additionally, he was a research scientist intern at \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_DeepMind\u0022\u003EGoogle DeepMind\u003C\/a\u003E in 2019. He is a recipient of several awards, including the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, research awards from Amazon, Google, and MathWorks, among others, and the inaugural Information Theory and Applications (ITA) \u201cSun\u201d (Gold) Graduation Award. His work has been recognized with Best Paper awards at several venues, including the Learning for Dynamics and Control (L4DC), INFORMS JFIG, and ACM Greenmetrics. He was named in the list of Outstanding Academic Leaders in Data by the CDO Magazine for two consecutive years in 2024 and 2023. His teaching and mentorship have been recognized with the Joseph A. Martore (1975) Excellence in Teaching Award in 2026, the Frank E.
