Dr. Torrance started in the summer on a grant from the Simons Foundation.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Ch5\u003EAbout the Scientific Software Research Faculty Fellowships\u003C\/h5\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe Simons Foundation\u2019s Mathematics \u0026amp; Physical Sciences division has awarded four new \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.simonsfoundation.org\/grant\/scientific-software-research-faculty-award\/\u0022\u003EScientific Software Research Faculty Fellowships\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe Scientific Software Research Faculty Fellowships help institutions establish new positions, providing the fellows\u2019 home institutions with five years of salary support for the awardee\u2019s academic-year salary and fringe benefits. These benefits cover 100 percent of a fellow\u2019s salary for the first two years and 50 percent for the remaining three years. Each fellowship also provides an annual $50,000 research allowance to each awardee. All fellowships are funded by Simons Foundation International and administered by the Simons Foundation.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Ch5\u003EAbout Douglas A. Torrance\u003C\/h5\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003EAdvancing Macaulay2 for the Computational Algebraic Geometry Community\u003C\/em\u003E\u003Cbr\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/d-torrance.github.io\u0022\u003EDouglas A. Torrance\u003C\/a\u003E is a computational algebraic geometer and commutative algebraist whose research focuses on secant varieties and tensor decomposition. At Georgia Tech, he will continue development of Macaulay2, a widely used software system for research in algebraic geometry and commutative algebra. His work will focus on improving performance and interoperability with other mathematical software, expanding functionality, and making the system more accessible to new users.
