{"691208":{"#nid":"691208","#data":{"type":"news","title":"SCI Faculty Brings Human-Centered AI Expertise to International Fulbright Summit","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EA School of Computing Instruction (SCI) faculty member recently shared his expertise in computing education with to an international audience.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ESCI Instructor \u003Cstrong\u003EPedro Guillermo Feij\u00f3o-Garc\u00eda\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003Ewas selected by Fulbright Colombia to moderate the closing panel of the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/fulbright.edu.co\/en\/fulbright-reimagined-summit\/\u0022\u003EFulbright Reimagined Summit 2026: AI Horizons: Learning Pathways for Tomorrow.\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EHeld last month at Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla, Colombia, the summit convened scholars, educators, policymakers, and industry leaders to examine how artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming education, work, governance, and society.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EFulbright Colombia invited Feij\u00f3o-Garc\u00eda to moderate the closing discussion, \u003Cem\u003EFrom Adopters to Architects: Professions of Tomorrow\u003C\/em\u003E, in recognition of \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/sites.gatech.edu\/research\/sigcse-2026\/\u0022\u003Ehis research on human-AI interaction\u003C\/a\u003E and the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/news\/sci-lecturer-presents-research-exploring-impostor-phenomenon-cs\u0022\u003Ehidden curriculum\u003C\/a\u003E in engineering and computer science education.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0022As a Fulbright alumnus, being invited to contribute to such an important event was an honor and a privilege,\u0022 Feij\u00f3o-Garc\u00eda said. \u0022Beyond the personal recognition, I viewed this opportunity as a meaningful platform to facilitate conversations around the future of education, technology, and workforce development.\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EFrom Computing Education to AI Futures\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAt Georgia Tech, Feij\u00f3o-Garc\u00eda directs \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/news\/undergrads-earn-national-recognition-computing-research\u0022\u003Ethe People-Agents Research for Computing Education (PARCE) Laboratory\u003C\/a\u003E. His research examines the intersection of computing education, STEM learning, and AI, focusing on student preparedness, professional development, and the hidden curriculum- which he explains as the implicit skills and expectations that shape students\u0027 academic and career success.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EFeij\u00f3o-Garc\u00eda says his perspective is shaped by years of work in computing education. During his master\u0027s studies in systems and computing engineering at Universidad de los Andes in Colombia, he explored ways to expand access to computing education through interactive programming environments. He went on to earn his Ph.D. in human-centered computing from the University of Florida, where he focused his research on computing education and human-centered AI.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0022AI is transforming how we learn, work, communicate, make decisions, and interact with one another,\u0022 Feij\u00f3o-Garc\u00eda said. \u0022As educators, we need to prepare students not only with technical competencies, but also with critical thinking, ethical reasoning, collaboration, and the ability to adapt.\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EPreparing Students for the Professions of Tomorrow\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ERather than viewing AI as a challenge for higher education, Feij\u00f3o-Garc\u00eda sees it as an opportunity for universities to rethink how they prepare students for an evolving workforce. He believes educators should help students develop the judgment to know when AI can enhance their work and when independent reasoning and human expertise are essential.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0022The conversation should not revolve around whether AI belongs in education, but rather how we integrate it responsibly and intentionally,\u0022 Feij\u00f3o-Garc\u00eda said.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EHe also hopes students begin to think of AI not only as artificial intelligence, but as augmented intelligence. \u0022The goal should not be to replace human thinking, but to enhance it,\u0022 he said.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EFeij\u00f3o-Garc\u00eda emphasized that AI should augment human capabilities rather than replace human judgment. Preparing students for an AI-driven workforce requires helping them understand when AI can support their work and when human reasoning, creativity, and expertise are essential.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EStrengthening U.S.\u2013Colombia Collaboration\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe summit reinforced the value of collaboration among scholars, educators, policymakers, and industry leaders in advancing research and education. Earlier this year, Feij\u00f3o-Garc\u00eda participated in another Fulbright Colombia event focused on strengthening scientific collaboration between Colombia and the United States.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/fulbrightspecialist.worldlearning.org\/the-fulbright-program\u0022\u003EFulbright Program\u003C\/a\u003E, which operates in more than 160 countries worldwide, is the United States government\u2019s flagship international academic exchange program to support peaceful relations between the people of the U.S. and the people of other countries. Fulbright Colombia, the binational commission for educational exchange between the U.S. and Colombia, has supported academic and scientific collaboration between the two countries since 1957.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EFeij\u00f3o-Garc\u00eda\u2019s academic journey reflects the impact of these collaborations.
