This short course is intended to provide an introduction into mechanical characterization by teaching the basics of theory as well as providing hands-on experience with the tools.

Participants will learn the basics behind common quasi-static mechanical tests through guided examples and calculations. They will learn how to interpret key mechanical properties and the underlying atomic mechanisms which lead to these. Participants will also gain some hands-on experience with mechanical testing equipment including electromechanical frames and the transducers that measure the mechanical properties. Attendees will also learn how to properly setup the system, select the appropriate hardware, and collect reliable data.

The course will also introduce servohydraulic test frames which are used to conduct dynamic tests in a variety of ways.
