Paper Craft Fundamentals with Michael Velliquette

Paper Craft Fundamentals is a hands-on workshop that introduces participants to essential techniques in paper-based art practices, including cutting, folding, scoring, rolling, weaving, and layering. Through guided demonstrations and self-directed experimentation, participants will develop a foundational understanding of these processes while exploring their potential for variation, combination, and personal expression.

The workshop is inspired by The Craft of Paper: Contemporary Takes on Tradition, an exhibition that examines how artists today are reinterpreting established paper craft techniques within contemporary art and design contexts. By the end of the workshop, they will have developed new technical skills as well as a deeper understanding of how paper-based practices continue to expand within contemporary creative fields.

Registration: Click on registration link to register for workshop. Please email anna.doll@rbi.gatech.edu for questions or more information.

About the Instructor: Michael Velliquette (American, b. 1971) is acclaimed for his meticulously crafted paper sculptures. Over two decades of working with paper, he is recognized as a leading voice in the contemporary renaissance of paper-based art. His work has been exhibited internationally, including the Shanghai International Paper Art Biennial; Global Paper at the Stadtmuseum Deggendorf, Germany; Paper Fascinationat the Gustav Lübke Museum, Germany; and the Cheongju Craft Biennale in South Korea. Velliquette’s work is held in major permanent collections such as the Chazen Museum of Art, the Racine Art Museum, the John Michael Kohler Art Center, The Progressive Corporation, and The Microsoft Collection. He has completed residencies and cultural exchanges worldwide and has been featured in Colossal and The New York Times. In 2021, he served as a judge on Discovery Channel’s Meet Your Makers Showdown. Velliquette is an Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
