Recent John H Martinson Honors Program graduate Carlton Cort was among the 2025 - 2026 academic year awardees, being presented with 3 awards!

Carlton’s first award, the Outstanding Electrical Engineering Senior Award, was conferred to him due to his high GPA and involvement in the Georgia Tech community. Carlton was a member of the John H Martinson Honors Program, Theta Chi Fraternity, an instructor (and dedicated laser cutter fan) in the HIVE makerspace, and a past CEO of the Georgia Tech Student Foundation. Carlton recounted the many times he sat in and presided over the Student Foundation’s Funding Sunday, where student organizations and initiatives pitched proposals to gain funding. In fact, one of the highlights of his time at Tech was going to the Student Org Fair and seeing all the organizations and projects that he helped secure funding for. Carlton’s tremendous presence in the campus community has inspired and enabled many students, making him an excellent recipient of this award.

Carlton’s next award, the Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Research Award, was conferred to him due to his involvement in and dedication to research. Carlton has performed rigorous research in robotics and neuroscience as part of the Neuroengineering Lab (SIPLab) and the Intelligent Vision and Automation Lab (IVALab) at Georgia Tech. As a research lead and soon-to-be peer-reviewed author, he has made many contributions to collective knowledge in his field. He plans to wrap up his research at Georgia Tech then transition to a Masters Fellowship at Carnegie Melon University. After his Masters, he has his sights set on a PhD program!

Carlton’s final award was the Provost’s Academic Excellence Award. Every year, each college at Georgia Tech nominates their top student for the prestigious Love Family Foundation Award and the Provost’s Academic Excellence Award. Due to his academic excellence and campus involvement, Carlton was nominated on behalf of the Georgia Tech College of Engineering and was honored with one of the four Provost’s Academic Excellence Awards!

Carlton enjoys engaging in fitness and the arts in his spare time. As an ex-hockey player, he loves to follow his favorite teams, the Chicago Blackhawks and Georgia Tech’s own hockey team, and occasionally get back on the ice. You may have seen him at the Campus Recreation Center; he says the best time to get a workout in is around lunch time when it’s less crowded, but you will never see him at the 5 pm rush! He is also a talented artist, specializing in detailed pencil art.

At his graduation, Carlton was awarded completion of the JMHP curriculum! Carlton was drawn to the Georgia Tech John H Martinson Honors Program by the amazing community we boast. Through the program, he has made lifelong friends and memories. He is even still roommates with one of his first-year roommates whom he met at the first-year retreat! His advice to the incoming class is to not harp on grades; your success at Georgia Tech is based on the people you meet, the teamwork skills you gain, and the way you get involved on campus.
