An expert in material procurement, automation protocols and\nsustainable energy alternatives for buildings, he is tasked with advancing Building\nConstruction education and research and with expanding its international\noutreach.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003ECastro was a finalist selected\nby a 12-member search committee, which comprised an equal mix of academics and\nsenior figures in the construction industry. Educated in Latin America and\nEurope, Castro is uniquely positioned to extend Georgia Tech\u2019s impact in the\nglobal construction industry, which is expected to double in key emerging\nmarkets over the next decade.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cI am certain that Daniel\u2019s leadership will\nstrengthen and redefine the character School of Building Construction in\nresponse to transforming industry\u2014an industry in which Georgia Tech graduates\nhave played a strong role, and which will continue to be a major contributor to\nthe nation\u2019s economy,\u201d said Alan Balfour, Dean of the College of Architecture.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cSignificantly, he will\nbring a broad and distinct international perspective to the ambitions of the\nSchool,\u201d he added.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003ECastro joined the\nfaculty of Georgia Tech in 2006 after teaching at Ohio University. He holds a\nPhD in Civil Engineering from Purdue, a MS in Construction Management from\nUniversity of Reading (United Kingdom) and a BS in Civil Engineering from the\nUniversidad de Los Andes (Colombia). A registered engineer he has membership in\nthe American Society of Civil Engineers, the Construction Research Council and\nthe International Association for Automation and Robotics in Construction. \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.bc.gatech.edu\/people\/daniel-castro\u0022\u003ERead Castro\u2019s full bio.\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EAs interim chair in\n2011, he prepared the proposal for a new PhD degree with a major in Building\nConstruction (final approval is expected in the fall 2011) and also led the\nwinning bid to host the American Society of Civil Engineers Construction\nResearch Congress at Georgia Tech in 2014.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EIn the near term, Castro\nwill begin implementing growth strategies outlined in response to Georgia\nTech\u2019s strategic plan.
